More About Alston Training and Adventure Centre

Photo of High Plains dining room High Plains provides for groups of up to 45 members.

The centre and surrounding land was originally a working farm and was converted into an outdoor centre in 1980 by the YMCA Herrington Burn and opened in September 1981. The YMCA ran the centre only for a short period before relocating to Weardale House at Ireshopeburn.

Centre owner and manager, Dave Simpson and his wife Gill, came to High Plains in 1989, bringing with them their daughter Dawn. Karen was born shortly afterwards and the family have taken an active part in running the centre since then.

"Throughout this time the emphasis of the centre has been family orientated, including the cats! Likewise friendships have been forged with many of the group leaders who have been attending the centre for more than fifteen years, some of whom have changed jobs and now bring groups here from their new organisations.

Along with our daughters we have also been involved with the local community by assisting with the Adventure Club organised by Gill and her friends."

"One of the nicest occurrences was an e-mail from some people who used to visit some 20 year ago as teenagers, recalling old times they asked if they were remembered."
